Grease Update

Boondocks

We haven’t talked much about the actual gathering of grease…mostly because it’s just second nature now! Sometimes I will even forget why people are staring at us… :)

Here are some stats for you:

  • In 2 months, we have gathered and filtered over 500 gallons of grease…for a savings of about $1,500!
  • We have traveled 5,000 miles on veggie oil, with no problems.
  • It takes approximately 1 -1. 5 hours to gather 100 gallons of grease.
  • We store 20 gallons of extra filtered grease in containers in front of the RV so we can fill up the car when necessary.
  • We have never had any problems finding grease.

We have definitely perfected our techniques and have learned a lot in the past 2 months; we are much more confident and have the knowledge to handle most anything with the system. As with anything new, it took a little while to learn the ins and outs, but I cannot imagine ever going back to using gas in our vehicles. We are so happy with our decision to go veggie!

  1. Oh the irony of finding oil in the Boondocks!
When are you guys heading to NC? Raleigh preferably or the surrounding area.

  2. We’ll be in NC mid-late November…possibly early December. That leg is still in the works.

  3. The love of my life and I (we’re in our late 20′s) have decided to leave our 9 to 5 jobs in February ’08 , buy an RV an go “fulltime”. We’ve been researching all aspects of fulltiming and buying the right RV for us. You have inspired us to buy a diesel and have it converted to a veggie oil engine!!! . We decided last night that we’re definitly going to do it! (We’re going to buy the Wonder clean washer too!!) Thank you so much for this website, it’s a great source of information and education about sustainable living in an RV.
    Thank you! – Kelly

  5. I’m sooo jealous that you’re able to run on grease! Jim and I looked into Golden Fuel System’s setup for our Dodge (http://www.liveworkdream.com/specs), but with the hitch in the back of the truck, and the toolbox, we can’t put a grease tank in. So we’ll settle for biodiesel for now, and continue forking out $800 plus a month in fuel. Grrr!

  7. wait, wait, wait!
we have a veg oil car, and are having so much trouble finding good oil! almost all the stuff we’ve found has suspended water in it, which wears on the injector pump– have you guys had any trouble with this?
Where do you get your oil? any restaurant? certain kinds?
    How do you filter it?
Thanks so much for any tips- we’re almost ready to give up!
