Hi! Congratulations on your adventures. Driving around the country, seeing the sights, and meeting different people has to be really interesting.

The NYT article raises some questions, and some detractors and bloggers are wondering how traveling approximately 20,000 miles in a vehicle that gets 8 mpg translated into an estimated cost savings of $25,000 by using free vegetable oil rather than diesel?

Is there more to the equation than:
20,000 miles / 8 mpg = 2500 gallons used
$25,000 / 2500 gals. = $10 / gallon diesel (which seems extremely overpriced, even given this past year's prices, and thus calls the $25,000 cost savings into question)?

from the article:
"Having traded up to their 1998 Western Alpine Coach in September, they figure that they have traveled about 20,000 miles in all and resorted to diesel fuel just once, outside of Austin, Tex.

“It was our fault,” Ms. Janssen said. “We didn’t start looking early enough.”

She estimates that they saved about $25,000 using the kitchen grease instead of conventional fuel. “We wouldn’t have been able to do the tour if we had had to pay for gas,” she said."

Please shed some light on the numbers!!

thx.
